PEOPLE AND PLACES OF "THE QUARANT"
I'd like to share with you a selection of locations in which the action of THE QUARANT takes place. Join me on a tour of modern day Venice to get a deeper flavour of the places in which Malin, Symon, Uberto and Lucia lived their lives back in 1348.
A FEW WORDS BEFORE WE START
It's true.... a lot's changed in Venice since 1348
...But not everything.
Despite many of the original buildings of the late medieval period being replaced or enhanced with often magnificent Renaissance palazzos, churches and townhouses, the street layout of the city, and the dozens of characteristic canals and waterways remain largely unchanged since the mid-14th century.
In the time in which THE QUARANT is set, the city is embarked on what becomes a transformative and enduring programme of building works, spread over almost three centuries, that sees much of the city's structures upgraded from timber to stone, combining to make the city what it is today.
In August 2019, I spent a week walking in Malin's footsteps, with my understanding wife Joanne offering to create a photographic record of our tour. I'd love to share with you how it felt to stand in the same places Malin did, seven centuries ago.
In the pages below, I'll try to offer a taste of what I found. In doing so, I'll try my best to make it spoiler-free.
