THE PUPPET MASTER - OUT ON 28TH AUGUST!
The weather forecast suggested a rain-free day. We believed it not, and switched our plans from an ascent of The Clisham, to an altogether less challenging walk up the flank of Toe Head. Just a 15 minute drive south from The Broch, and through the small settlement of Northton.
Imagine my delight when we spied the skeletal jaws of a Minke whale. Having already committed to a pivotal scene in the novel where a whale is lying beached just a small distance from where we stood, I confess to a most unattractive spell of smugness at my most inspired of choices! Joanne didn't let this wallow last long, though, suggesting that the hill wouldn't climb itself. Still.....
The wide gravel track taken by Martin beckoned from the other side of a wooden gate marking the end of the road proper. Past a couple of groups of cattle, we wove our way onto the south side of the narrowing peninsular, and thence up past a small ruined church and onto the open hill. The weather was holding off, but recent downpours had left the hill pretty wet in parts. an hour later, we were treated to some amazing views across to Taransay, and further north to The Clisham.
Every so often the clouds parted and we were treated to increasingly panoramic views across the coast to Taransay and over Luskentyre to the main Harris hills. The wind had really got up by the time we reached the summit cairn and the nearby Trig point - as you can tell by how well Joanne wrapped herself up...
We returned to the car via the beach where Martin first sees Caitlin.
